UniPIN is an experimental Building Navigation System for the University of Paderborn.
The UniPIN application is an experimental software that was created for study and research purposes at the University of Paderborn. It is a non-commercial building navigation system at the University of Paderborn for mobile devices, the use of which is based on voluntariness.
UniPIN can display the card data of the entire university campus (25 buildings, 10 floors, approx. 4344 rooms), calculate routes between rooms or to score and estimate the position of the device using GPS (outside the building) or using WLAN signals (within buildings).
It is optionally possible to display your own position or make the position of friends visible in the card data. The display of the position of friends is only possible if this explicitly
is activated by the respective participant. UniPIN does not save position data or routes from users.
Users can create learning groups and search for learning groups. It is also possible to reproduce videos of the Uniwalk for route sections in part of the University.
The accuracy of the position estimate in buildings depends on a variety of factors. Among other things, the number of base stations that can be received, the nature of the walls and the smartphone themselves are to be mentioned. Thus, the accuracy of the position estimate within the buildings can fluctuate considerably!
The Department of Community Technology (EIM-E/NT) of the University of Paderborn has been running research in the field of navigation in buildings since 2010. The UniPIN system was created during this time. It consists of an Android software in the frontend and a web server including a database in the backend. In addition to scientific employees, many students also worked on the project. The University of Paderborn awarded the project in 2013 with one of the university's research prices.
So if a position estimate is not quite as precise, or the display on your smartphone shows an error message, please always remember that this is experimental software!
